Anasim’s Effective Current Density (ECD) published
Anasim Corporation / Sept. 25, 2008
Anasim’s principal invention of “effective current density”, or ECD for short, has been published by the United States Patent & Trademarks Office as USPTO Publication 20080221850.
The application of ECD to power grid analysis detaches simulation time complexity from the number of wires in the grid or the number of load and capacitance components connecting to the grid. More importantly, ECD permits true-electromagnetic simulations of chip and package/board power grids including key R, L and C parameters as well as di/dt and resonance effects.
ECD is the core simulation technology in Anasim’s power integrity aware floorplanner pi-fp.

Package on Package (PoP) needs multi-grid simulation
Anasim Corporation / Aug. 06, 2008
As handsets and ultra-portable devices continue scaling, a trend that is becoming common is Package-on-Package or PoP. Read more at this EETimes article link.
PoP designs often include multiple chip power grids paralleled together, bringing complex electromagnetic interactions between these grids. Modeling and simulating such multi-grid power integrity scenarios is a snap for pi-fp, and is critical for operating voltage and energy optimization for such system-in-package architectures.

White paper on pi-fp to HSpice correlation
Anasim Corporation / June 16, 2008
While pi-fp is a physics-based “surface” simulator as opposed to a discrete component model-based SPICE simulator, correlation studies between pi-fp and HSpice, the industry standard for circuit simulation, show that within modeling limitations, the two simulators track extremely well for noise amplitudes and temporal behavior.
A research report on this correlation by Gayathri Ganapthy of the Arizona State University is available for download from Anasim here.

Anasim presents “Software, Nano-Hardware and Energy”
Anasim founder Raj Nair presented “Software, Nano-Hardware and Energy” at NanoEquity Asia 2008, May 28, 2008, to an audience of technologists, entrepreneurs and investors in Singapore.
Discussing trends and opportunities in Hardware and Software evolution, Raj postulated that software will take its place as a true manifestation of intelligence in the coming decades. He pointed out that focusing upon energy and cost efficiencies, software development will emulate natural processes, leading to accelerated evolution in machines aiding life.

Dynamic Voltage Droop & Total Power Integrity
May 23, 2008: Anasim founder Raj Nair introduces Total Power Integrity for SoC/SiP designs in an EETimes® article publication Dynamic Voltage Droops and Total Power Integrity. This article is also available in HTML form here.
The article defines and explores ‘total power integrity’ as true-electromagnetic analysis of interactions of load current profiles with power network impedance on an integrated circuit or system.
For far too long, the EDA industry has obscured comprehensive noise analysis including L*di/dt, noise wave propagation and resonant effects by dismissing on-chip inductance as irrelevant to power integrity. In nanoscale processes, where edge rates are at or below 100ps, noise frequencies are 5 GHz or greater with noise waves dissipating inside a chip before they ever reach package leads. In other words, dynamic noise or L*di/dt is determined largely within the chip, and not as much by package inductance that is shielded from these high-frequency noise waves by on-chip capacitance and resistance.
Most articles from the industry continue to talk, even today, only about package inductance as the principal determinant of on-chip dynamic noise. Anasim believes this to be a myth leading us headlong into the Power Integrity Wall. Are ripples in a lake caused only by obstruction in the channels that feed it?

Anasim releases pi-fp simulator for Linux
Anasim’s DEMO pi-fp simulator for Linux systems may now be downloaded here. A GUI for Linux systems is under development.
The compact pi-fp simulation engine accepts commands in a netlist text file format. These commands describe an SoC’s floor plan, power grid, power integrity management components and power delivery system at a high level of abstraction while matching actual physical layout. The commands are detailed in the included simulator manual.
The simulator processes the high level SoC description provided and solves Maxwell’s equations for the simulation surface, deriving true-electromagnetic behavior in the SoC. Results are output into a TEXT data file and may be rendered visually with any graphical visualizer.
